In this post, I will talk about 6 things to know before starting a website. These things are crucial to your online success.

It’s essential that you learn about them before you even attempt to start your blogging business online.

Back when I started blogging which was about six years ago, I didn’t really pay attention to any of these things. Six months into my blogging I had to take my website down because it wasn’t working or earning money.

That’s when I decided to rethink my steps to follow the rules of blogging online which has led to my success now.

So without further ado, let dives right into  6 things to know before starting a website.

What is Your Niche

It’s important to know your niche. The reason a niche is essential is that it’s cost effective as well you know the product that you’re going to be marketing.

By creating a specialized market, where you’re targeting to a particular group of people helps you rise above the competition. Read my post on how to find a niche

When you understand your niche, it shows that you are starting to understand your market.

This allows you to:

  • Identify the unique needs of your audience
  • Provide new products
  • Match your products to your audience needs
  • Communicate with efficiency
  • Identify how you match up against your competitors

You need to realize that one size fits all is not going to work, especially if you want to target one group of people.

I’ve been in the making industry for the past six years. In my time so much has changed. People have learned to market with focus.

It’s this marketing that is driving up their sales.

It’s also come to my attention that people who are too broad/general in their marketing online catch fewer people.

When selecting a niche, you need to find a problem, for which only you have the solution. Your solution needs to be unique as well as precisely what your audience is looking for.

Your content will need to be targeted towards a group of people who need your product. These are the people that are going to create word-of-mouth buzz for what you offer.

A niche can belong to any one of these categories:

  • Electronics
  • Family
  • Crafts
  • Food
  • Fitness/health
  • Lifestyle
  • Travel
  • Small business
  • Fashion

Out of these broad topics, you will find something particular to the category which will then become your niche.

Consistency is Key

The reason consistency is key to online blogging is that people have short attention spans. Some bloggers may get away with posting three times a week.

These bloggers are usually people who have been in the industry for the last 20 years. They already have readership built up; their readers will often return to their blogs.

But most of us have to post almost every day to keep our bloggers interested. Otherwise, we risk losing our readers.

Why do we have to consistent?

Because we haven’t built our trust in our audience yet, most of our readers come to our blog or website to look for a solution to their problem. If they don’t find a solution, they will go look elsewhere.

When they see us being inconsistent with our blogging schedule, we can expect the same type of inconsistency from them.

If you’re not dropping by your blog as often, how can you expect others to take your blog seriously?

The consistency of your blog not only relates to your posting, but it also relates to the overall theme of your website on the message you’re trying to get out to your readers.

Money Will Follow, But Not Right Away

Many people think that when they start blogging, they will start making money right away.

No, it is not going to happen!

This misconception runs rampant in the blogging world. Many new bloggers sign up thinking that they will start a website; people will come running to buy what they have to offer.

The first thing about blogging is building trust with your audience. To establish trust it can take up to four months before people see that you’re the real deal.

When they start seeing you as someone who’s not going to close up shop and leave, is when they started getting invested into your website. Most people only want to invest in something if they know that it’s there for the long term.

So with that thought in mind, you need to focus on building up an audience who are going to become your buyers eventually.

Be Prepared to Learn New Things

This was such a learning curve for me. I went from being a personal trainer to someone teaching others how to market online.

I not only had to learn how to create a website, but I also had to learn how to write for online reading.

There were days where I was frustrated because what I was doing was not working.

I also had to learn how to find the right keywords to target an audience who would enjoy reading what I was providing.

Another thing which was new to me was learning how to manage my time. When you have a 9-to-5 job it’s easy to get up, get ready and then go to work. You know what your schedule is going to look like.

But when you’re at home working by yourself, you have to prepare yourself in advance. Knowing that at any time things can change means you have to be ready to change your thinking hats.

Personally, for me, the toughest thing to learn was to rely on myself. At work, there was a whole team/group of people working towards one goal.

We could all put our heads together to come up with a solution. But when working on my own, that wasn’t the case.

There have been so many times in the past, where I’ve had to come up with my own solution. Instead of it taking an hour to come up with a solution, there were times where I’ve spent four hours thinking of how to do a task.

Are You Prepared For Rejection

By rejection I mean people say no to you.

When I started blogging online on my website, I thought it would be easy to get accepted by affiliate programs.

But that was not the case. Most affiliates before they accept someone into the program will check out your website to see if what you’re doing will match their merchants.

My suggestion here is to have at least 10 to 15 blog posts published before you approach any affiliate programs.

By not taking an affiliate network rejection personal you can rework your website. Reapply most times the affiliate network will accept you.
