Stop The Escape Route Plan With These 4 Simple Strategies

Granted people who are caught in a fire should have an escape route plan.

But someone who is starting a business for themselves should never give themselves an option of escaping.

An escape route needs to be eliminated before the business is even started. Because entry into the world of business is unknown, for many it’s easy to retreat to safety and comfort when obstacles get in the way.

Many people if they suffer a setback will plan an escape route. It’s doesn’t happen intentionally, most times this plan takes shape in the back of their mind. They know if they give themselves permission to quit, they can do it anytime they want. Sometimes the idea can seem not so groundbreaking, which causes them further grief. Other times not seeing the success they see so many having, discourages them from trying harder. Rather than be positive, self-doubt takes over their business mind which then puts them into the action having an escape route plan.

My philosophy as a previous business consultant was to tell people,” only do this if you can take it all the way. Otherwise, it’ll be a waste of your time and my time.”

I felt like when people were avoiding reaching their goals, or when they abandoned their goals, they were shortchanging themselves — cheating only themselves out of success.

Now take for instance Oprah Winfrey, she was fired from her first television job because the producers felt she was too emotionally involved in her stories. If you know the rest of her story, then you know it is that very emotional involvement that took her to her $3 billion empire.

If she had given herself an escape route plan, she probably wouldn’t be where she is today. When she speaks people listen.

Pretty amazing right!

So now that we’ve discussed the first strategy to derail sabotage, I will list the other three in no particular order.

Avoid Avoidance to Keep Moving Forward

Many times it’s easy to come up with ways to avoid doing what needs to be done in a home business. Especially if someone drops in for a visit for a cup of coffee. When I’m working in my room where my desk is, I find reasons to get up and walk away.

But then again I always come back, because I know the work that I do now determines my long-term success.

Mindset shift to become a self-determined individual is an action that has to be incorporated in our daily life. To be able to shift the mindset means not working from a victim set mentality.

People, who come in with this mentality to establish a business online, will find themselves filling their schedule, yet leaving no time to dedicate to their business. Read the post I wrote 16 habits of successful people to see others do keep themselves focused.

Not that I work from a victim set mentality, but there are times when I will tell myself, “oh I have way too much to do right now.”

My way of thinking is I should take a break, even though I haven’t done anything. I’m already scheduling in a break which shouldn’t be due for at least 3 to 4 hours.

Moving forward is the only way you are going to achieve success. Looking at an escape from your own online business is not going to bring you any rewards. It just means any investment you are making is for nothing.  Something you want to stay from.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

This is a tough one for many people who start doing online business, especially where selling is involved.

I found that when I started my website, I would go to Google analytics almost every day to see how many people had come to look at my website.

Why was I doing that?

Because I was comparing myself people, who are already successful. Mind you the very people that I was comparing myself to had already been going at it for 5+ years, where I had only been at it for a month.

I don’t even know why I thought I should be as successful as they were since they had so much time on me already.

You have to remember when these people started in their online business; they were just like you and me starting from the bottom up. Now those very same people are known as the influencers.

These people have been at it for a long time. They know the ins and outs of the business. They are constantly changing their tactics to meet the new demands of online marketing. While some of us are still learning the ropes.

Rather than compare yourself to them, why not let them influence you to guide your business straight to success.

Failure is Okay, But Regrets Will Take You Down

Yes, you read that right failure is okay. What failure will do is it will show you what you did wrong and how you can correct it. Have you ever heard of the saying “from failure comes success”?

This saying is very true because what it means is the person did not give up they kept going at their goal until they became a success.

Regrets on the other causes people anguish as well self-pity, and some even begin loathing themselves. This type of mentality leads people to think “what if this had happened,” as you know the what if thought can’t be captured nor what happened to be changed.

What do I mean by can’t be captured?

What I mean by this is that you cannot go back and capture this thought, but because of regret you may be metaphorically trying to chase it. By pursuing thoughts in your head which can’t be changed can easily lead to mental anguish.

Mental anguish leads to regret…so on the thoughts keep going round and round. The more the thoughts spin through your head, the more the mental anguish increases.

Mental anguish leads to the regret of what went wrong. It’s better to label it as a lesson. At least you can learn from experience, but disappointment leaves no room for learning. By doing this, you can make a better attempt at improving the lesson which can lead to ultimate success.

But before you close your escape route plan, make sure you have everything you need that’s necessary to achieve your online business goal. Do you have a business in place, if not then why not read my beginners guide to making money online to get started?

I don’t mean go and quit your job; this can lead to disruption of your lifestyle. Instead, do what you need to get done even if it’s part-time.

Leave any thoughts or comments on what you think about my strategies to stop the escape route plan.

  1. Hi,

Many thanks for your post which is a great encouragement for many people who’ll be looking back in regret at going the online business route.   It’s no use going into a business without preparation or having things needed to achieve your online business goal.

Daily frustrations of not achieving the business goal, is what leads many to think of an escape route.  Indeed entering into the world of business is unknown and so abandoning goals can make people to cheat themselves out of success.  Examples like Oprah Winfrey’s are more than encouraging.  Working from home has its own challenges e.g you get to make your own work time etc so there’s the temptation to get up and walk away.  And not come back to it far later than necessary.

A mindset shift to become a self-determined individual for the success of your business cannot be over emphasized.  Comparing oneself to gurus is only normal.  They are appreciated when you become an influencer yourself, after you let them influence you and guide your business to success.

I agree failure is okay. Regrets on the other hand causes people anguish and should not be encouraged as it can lead to mental anguish. You rightly said that whatever goes wrong with a new business should be seen as a lesson so that a better attempt can be made at improving the lesson which can lead to ultimate success.

    1. I hear you about daily frustrations and not achieving business goals. At one time I was one of those people as well. Going into an online business without preparation does truly set one up for failure.

If a person goes into a business online fully well-prepared, yet still fails, at least they will know what needs to be fixed. What part of their preparation failed them.

Regret is so hindering to some people that they’re never able to get out of it.

      Thank you for the comment.

  2. Great post and very informative.

I used to compare myself to others and be very competitive and wanting the same as they had at the same age.

But when growing up i realized that it is easier said than done, and it takes effort to reach that.

I always avoid of standing still now, since I want a future for my family without any worries and giving them the best.

Thanks for sharing it with us!

    1. At one time I used to compare myself to others as well, it was not a good thing for me. Because of that I would constantly feel like a failure even though I had made some preparation before.

      Thank you for your comment.

  3. I think the best way to avoid escape route plan is to identify what are you escaping from. From there ,we all could focus on the big chuck, then try to break it part by part.Because most likely we are scared of the amount of work which would overwhelmed us.With a plan ,we could try to assigned it into daily task which what small piece we could most probably achieve by short amount of time which sound way easier .I m assign myself tons of very small task just to avoid boredom of doing something similar .

    1. I agree with you, the first thing people need to know is what are they going to be escaping from or what are they afraid of. Some people are afraid of it actually working for them.

It can be overwhelming with the amount of work that is involved. But if we break it down in chunks it can be achieved.

  4. You really hit the nail on the head here with this article as I can relate to it so much. You are very right in that you can’t have an escape route if you truly want to have a successful business. You have to work hard at it even on the days you really don’t want to. Trust me, I struggle with this a lot, but other factors happening in my life right now are really causing me to focus hard on getting my online websites to a very successful state. I tell you what though, regrets are VERY hard for me to overcome especially when you compare yourself to others who you consider successful.

I regret not getting to experience the things in life that so many people have been able to when they were younger. I’ve never been in a relationship, never had that first kiss, never had anyone fall in love with me, never been married and I’m nearly 40. I sometimes feel like my life has been pointless because of not experiencing those things, but I just can’t always dwell on that as I know if I keep dwelling on the things I’ve never experienced, I’ll miss the things that have yet to happen in my life. Sorry I got off on a tangent on that, but I will say that I’m very focused on getting my online business to be a success.

I haven’t always been consistent, but I still push forward when I can and I try to look at the small successes and achievements I’ve accomplished along the way to reaching the bigger successes and achievements. Thank you so much for sharing this as it is very helpful. What’s the biggest success you’ve have in regards to your online business when following those 4 strategies?

    1. You wouldn’t believe how many people there are who actually plan their way out of doing an online business. The critical internal chatter can really get in the way of one achieving success online.

The biggest success I would say I have had in implementing these four strategies was not walking away.

  5. What a great article!!! You are totally correct when you say to stop the escape route. To many people start a business thinking they will make a ton of money with no effort. Then when it does not happen right away they just abandon their ideas and dreams. If you are passionate about what your business is you will have a much greater chance for success because you will be doing what you love to do. You are also spot on about being easily distracted. This has been my biggest challenge. I full-time RV. So many times I look out the window and start thinking that “I have done enough for the day” and that I should be out hiking or on my motorcycle. In reality I have been surfing social media and hardly put any real time in…lol. I have also fell victim to checking analytics every day. Thankfully I no longer do that…lol. Anyone following your 4 simple steps has definitely began their path in the right direction… Dennis

    1. Unfortunately at the beginning of starting affiliate marketing I was one of those people who thought all I had to do was slap up a site, put some content in it and the customers would come. But didn’t happen that way. Still I find myself sometimes making excuses to get up and go do something else. It truly does become an everyday battle to have to make yourself stay still and get the work done, but by following the escape group plan with the four strategies I find I can get things done.

  6. Hi Jag,

Thank you very much for sharing this post.

I agree that the advice you gave your clients was to do something all the way. Either do something a 100% or don’t do it at all.

I will be honest and admit that there were many things I never did the entire way or got bored and gave up half way. I am striving to change that because I realize if I do not, I will never be successful.

I also really like the advice you have given about learning from mistakes instead of having regrets and playing it over and over in your mind. That is something I have been working on too. Meditation has helped me a lot with this and it has also helped me be more positive. Instead of dwelling over something, I am now able to learn from the mistake and move on with my day. I am also sometimes able to laugh off the mistake!

I would also like to mention that I read about you on this blog and your story is very inspiring. You have achieved success inspite of the challenges life threw your way.

I am going to save your site and come back later to check out other posts.

I wish you all the best 🙂

    Vik

    1. In my past days of being a business consultant face-to-face, it was difficult to tell people to quit their business if they weren’t going to give it their all. Fortunately there are some that will learn from their mistakes, but a few will give up and not even make an attempt again.

Thank you for reading my story.

  7. You are right when you say simple as they are so simple that they often get overlooked, however they are so important and will ultimately decide whether or not you make your business into a successful one.

When I decided to start building a business I certainly didn’t take on any of the tips you listed however I have learnt the hard way over time. The biggest one from the list is that comparing yourself to others or your website/business to others in your field this will only unmotivate you and make reaching your goals tougher and the road longer.

Thanks again for sharing these tips,

    Josh

    1. They are simple step, but often overlooked. You’re right our success can be determined by how well prepared we are.

      Thank you for your comment.

  8. Super great article. I know with myself I keep having this anxious self doubt feeling in the back of my mind. I know its just bc I’m doing something new and potentially life changing. But its still lingering. After reading this I think when you mentioned an escape route it clicked. I’m preparing myself for a way out if it goes wrong rather than setting up for success. Does that make sense? If so how does one begin to block that or use to an advantage?

    1. The judgmental or critical part of us which creates this doubt  internal chatter really does have to be dealt with on a daily basis, especially when doing something new.

It does make sense preparing your way out if success to follow. Usually that’s the easy way out, not everyone really wants to climb uphill to win the battle. But climbing slowly can surely help to get to the top.

I find that when my internal chatter starts to say negative things, I instantly change my thoughts.
